Bouchra Karboubi sets Record as the Only Female central referee at the Ongoing AFCON

Moroccan international football referee Bouchra Karboubi set history as the only female central referee at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations Yesterday evening. The Moroccan officiated Group A clash between Nigeria and Guinea Bissau.

The game kicked off at 6 PM GMT+1 at the Félix Houphouët Boigny Stadium in Abidjan. Arguably, one of the tournament favorites Nigeria took group A lowest team and thrashed them 1 goal to nil. An own-goal by defender Opa Sangante, who lunged in to stop the ball reaching an unmarked Victor Osimhen after 36 minutes, was enough to separate the two teams in a game that was far more evenly-matched that their respective rankings would have suggested.

The Super Eagles had the best of the chances, with Osimhen the constant threat. They had two goals disallowed, both due to handballs by the Napolis centre-forward. Additionally, the loss saw Guinea Bissau clash out of the tournament after playing and losing three out of three games.

The win put Nigeria second on the table after Equatorial Guinea which is ahead on goal difference. Due to this, the Super Eagles face the second-placed team in Group C, which will be one of Cameroon, Senegal or Guinea.

Karboubi is among the seven Moroccan referees that the Confederation of African Football (#CAF) appointed to officiate at the ongoing continental tournament in Cote d’Ivoire. She is now a walking legend and has cemented the women’s place in the ongoing tournament as well as inspiring millions of girls out there.
