Côte d’Ivoire Regulator Cracks Down on Illegal Gambling, Destroys Over 100 Slot Machines

In one of its largest operations targeting illegal online gambling, Côte d’Ivoire’s Gambling Regulatory Authority (Autorité de Régulation des Jeux de Hasard – ARJH) has destroyed more than 110 unlicensed slot machines and their components in Abidjan.
Working alongside the Economic and Financial Criminal Unit and the Criminal Asset Recovery Agency, the ARJH carried out the enforcement exercise, which also involved the disposal of 84 boxes and 13 bags containing various electrical and electronic parts. The destruction took place in the presence of administrative, judicial, and traditional leaders.
This operation forms part of a nationwide campaign to eliminate unauthorised gambling, following similar actions in other regions such as Bouaflé.

According to the ARJH, the initiative received strong backing from local authorities, including the Sub-Prefect of Bingerville, Kapié Koné, who represented the Prefect of Abidjan. The Chairman of the Regulatory Council, Jules Dally, emphasised the dangers of illegal gambling, commended President Alassane Ouattara for establishing the ARJH, and reiterated the agency’s commitment to enforcing order within the gaming sector.
To strengthen the legal gambling framework, the ARJH will continue public awareness campaigns highlighting the need for compliance with Article 10 of Law No. 2020-480, which requires prior authorisation to operate slot machines in the country.
Director General Kouakou Okou announced that the authority will also host an annual conference bringing together gaming operators and judicial representatives. The forum will promote dialogue and collaboration to advance responsible regulation and sustainable development within Côte d’Ivoire’s gambling industry.
