National Gambling Board Launches New Portal to Combat Illegal Operators

The National Gambling Board (NGB) has officially launched a dedicated online web portal providing a consolidated list of all legal and verified gambling operators in South Africa, with the aim of combating the rising threat of illegal online and offshore gambling while promoting responsible practices among industry players.
The newly launched platform offers a centralized and regularly updated directory where members of the public can instantly verify if a gambling operator, whether land-based or online, is legally licensed within South Africa. By providing this transparency, the NGB aims to empower consumers to make informed choices and ensure they only engage with regulated channels that provide necessary legal safeguards.
“We are not encouraging gambling beyond recreation, but rather promoting informed and responsible participation for those who choose to engage in it. Our priority is to protect vulnerable individuals and ensure compliance within the gambling industry,” said Acting CEO of the NGB, Mr. Lungile Dukwana.

The risks of participating in illegal gambling are substantial, often leading to financial loss, fraudulent practices, and a total lack of recourse for consumers when disputes arise. The NGB believes that providing a reliable verification tool will reduce these risks and strengthen overall public trust in the country’s regulated gambling sector.
Mr. Dukwana described the platform as a “critical step” in protecting citizens from the dangers of the unregulated market. He emphasized that the list is not merely for public use but will also serve as a vital resource for law enforcement agencies, tax authorities, and financial institutions to enhance collaborative enforcement efforts against illegal operators. He further noted that the priority remains the protection of vulnerable individuals and ensuring strict compliance across the industry.
The NGB emphasized that the publication of this list is solely for public protection and is not meant to promote or advertise gambling services. The public is encouraged to verify an operator’s status before engaging in any gambling activities and to report any suspicious or illegal conduct directly to the NGB or the relevant Provincial Licensing Authorities (PLAs).
