NLGRB Promotes Responsible Gaming Awareness Among Students at Panyandoli Self Help Secondary School

The National Lotteries and Gaming Regulatory Board (NLGRB) recently visited the Kiryandongo Refugee Settlement, where they engaged with students at Panyandoli Self Help Secondary School in an initiative to raise awareness about underage gambling in an increasingly digital era.
Technological advances have contributed to the rise of underage gambling in Uganda by increasing access through mobile betting apps and internet-enabled devices. Studies show that about 40% of secondary school students have gambled, with around 17% identified as problem gamblers. In addition, reports indicate that over 50% of Ugandan youth participate in betting, highlighting the growing prevalence of gambling among young people.
As technology becomes more integrated into daily life, social media advertising and instant digital payments have made gambling more attractive and convenient for minors, leading to serious consequences such as poor academic performance, financial losses, and mental health issues like stress and addiction.

The NLGRB’s Responsible Gaming team, in an effort to address this rising concerns, worked directly with school leadership to provide students with vital information about the risks of gambling, which is essential to safeguarding their well-being.
Mr. Fernansio Okot, the Deputy Head Teacher of Panyandoli Self Help Secondary School, said, “We appreciate the National Lotteries and Gaming Regulatory Board for taking the time to engage with our students and share such vital information. Equipping students with this knowledge is essential in today’s digital world and can truly make a difference.”
A core principle of this outreach program is the belief that no one should be excluded from protection. The NLGRB has stated a firm commitment: “We may not reach everyone at the same time, but we will not leave anyone behind.” By extending these programs to refugee communities, the board ensures that every young person is included in the mission to prevent the harms of underage gambling.
Through ongoing education and community collaboration initiatives, NLGRB’s goal is to build a more knowledgeable generation that is well-equipped to succeed and thrive in a digital world, while also staying safe and protected from the potential dangers and risks associated with gambling.
