Women in Law Enforcement in North West Province Lead Joint Compliance Campaign in Vryburg
Female officers and compliance inspectors representing several key provincial and local stakeholders in the North West Province gathered in Vryburg to conduct joint inspections across the Naledi Local Municipality in celebration of Women’s Month.
This highly collaborative enforcement team integrated personnel and resources from several prominent agencies, including the Department of Economic Development, Environment, Conservation and Tourism (DEDECT), specifically its Liquor, Consumer, and Tourism departments, the North West Gambling Board (NWGB), the South African Police Service (SAPS), the Dr. Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District Municipality, and Naledi Local Municipality Traffic Officers. By pooling their regulatory expertise, the joint task force ensured that compliance and licensing standards were thoroughly checked across all targeted establishments.
The primary purpose of the campaign was to educate local business owners about the serious consequences of regulatory non-compliance. Authorities designed the educational outreach to highlight how licensing violations can negatively impact the future viability of businesses and threaten the livelihoods of local entrepreneurs.
This operation placed women at the forefront of local law enforcement, demonstrating their leadership in protecting community safety and maintaining public order.

During these operations, inspectors from the North West Gambling Board uncovered two illegal gambling operations operating covertly within local internet cafés. Immediate regulatory and enforcement actions were taken, resulting in fines of R2,500 issued to each operator.
The scale of these unlicensed setups varied significantly, the first internet café was found to be operating with 44 computers used for unauthorized gambling, while the second café housed a much larger operation, containing 50 computers alongside 43 illegal gambling machines. These enforcement actions underscore the ongoing efforts of the provincial task force to eliminate illegal gambling activity and protect licensed businesses.
Following the raids, the North West Gambling Board issued an urgent appeal to community members, reminding them to gamble only at licensed gambling premises. Participating in gambling activities at unlicensed operations is unlawful under provincial law. The public is also cautioned that the law does not provide any legal protection or recourse for players who frequent illegal establishments.
