African Football on the Rise as VAR is Set to Be Implemented in South Africa and Tanzania
The South African League and the Tanzania Premier League have announced the incorporation of Video Assistant Refereeing (VAR), in a decision aimed at aligning with international standards, a significant advancement for football across Africa.
South Africa is poised to officially adopt VAR in its domestic league starting next season. League officials are optimistic that this initiative will lead to a reduction in officiating mistakes, enhance match outcomes, and elevate the league’s standing on the international stage.
On the other hand, Tanzania is making notable progress as well. The Tanzania Premier League is preparing to implement VAR for key matches, focusing particularly on critical fixtures and those that will determine the championship. To facilitate this technology’s seamless integration, the Tanzanian Football Federation has partnered with international experts to provide training for referees.

The increasing use of VAR in Africa mirrors the pioneering efforts of Morocco, which became the first country on the continent to adopt the technology in its domestic league back in 2019, paving the way for others to follow. Egypt quickly followed suit in 2020 by introducing VAR in its Premier League, significantly enhancing the quality of officiating in its domestic contests. South Africa Tanzania VAR
