Betika’s Ksh 15 Million Sponsorship Set to Transform Kenyan Athletics Ahead of Tokyo

NAIROBI, Kenya, November 25 – Athletics Kenya (AK) President Lt Gen (Rtd) Jackson Tuwei is optimistic that the newly signed partnership with Betika will significantly enhance competition in local events and improve the welfare of athletes.

With a sponsorship worth Ksh 15 million, Tuwei believes this financial boost will provide athletes the comfort of competing locally with the assurance of substantial rewards if they win.

“The World Athletics president recently announced plans to offer generous prize money for Olympic winners. As World Athletics and other countries progress, we too must advance. This motivated us to seek support that can offer our athletes meaningful rewards,” Tuwei stated.

He emphasized the positive impact of the sponsorship, saying, “The change has been significant… we are actively pursuing more sponsors to further enhance our athletes’ experiences.”

The agreement was formalized in an event at the Eka Hotel in Nairobi, where Ksh 5 million of the total sponsorship will be allocated to the ongoing Cross Country Series, covering the last three legs, while the remainder will fund the upcoming Track and Field Weekend Meet.

Betika CEO Mutua Mutava echoed the firm’s dedication to aiding AK in achieving its goal of a successful medal haul in Tokyo.

“We are honored to be part of the Road to Tokyo campaign, with confidence that our athletes will make us proud. This sponsorship will equip athletes with the resources necessary for success at the 2025 World Championships,” Mutava remarked.

He expressed that the partnership is a reflection of a patriotic commitment to nurturing talent and development in Kenyan athletics, stating, “Kenya is renowned for its exceptional athletic talent, and this partnership underscores our dedication to growing the sport in the country.”

The Cross Country Series will continue this Saturday, November 30, after a two-week hiatus, with additional legs scheduled in Ol Kalou on December 14 and Kisii on January 4. The national championships are set to take place on February 8, where winners in each category will receive Ksh 150,000.
