LONASE and CEPIAD Partner to Tackle Gambling Addiction in Senegal

The Senegalese national lottery operator, LONASE, officially signed a partnership agreement with the Dakar Integrated Addiction Treatment Center (CEPIAD) to promote responsible gambling and manage addiction-related risks.

Rising concerns about gambling addiction in Senegal, fueled by the rapid growth of mobile and online betting, especially among young people, have made gambling more accessible and frequent, increasing exposure to addiction. Studies conducted in Dakar indicate alarmingly high levels of problematic gambling behavior, with a large proportion of players exhibiting moderate to severe addiction risks, while only a small number seek professional help.

Reports of financial distress, job loss, and compulsive betting behaviors further highlight the social impact of the issue. In this context, the partnership reflects a broader shift toward treating gambling as a public health concern, combining prevention efforts from LONASE with clinical support and addiction treatment services from CEPIAD.

Through this collaboration, both organizations have committed to pooling their expertise to address the complexities of gambling-related issues. The partnership is built on three primary pillars, risk prevention, which involves strategies to minimize potential harms, public awareness, which focuses on initiatives to educate the public on safe gambling practices, and addiction support, providing resources and care for individuals struggling with gambling-related addictions.

By leveraging LONASE’s outreach and CEPIAD’s clinical expertise, the agreement aims to make support systems more accessible to those in need. This initiative exemplifies a proactive approach to public health, emphasizing awareness and ensuring that gambling remains a form of entertainment rather than a source of distress.

This partnership underscores a growing trend of collaboration between corporate and medical institutions to create a safer environment and address addiction challenges.
