The National Lotteries and Gaming Regulatory Board (NLGRB) reached over 10,000 students in Uganda, warning them about the dangers of underage gambling.
During the sensitization engagements, the Responsible Gaming team informed students that underage gaming can jeopardize their education. Gambling will lead to poor academic performance, increased absenteeism, and, in severe cases, school dropouts.
The learners were also warned about the potential mental health risks associated with early exposure to gaming, including anxiety, stress, and addictive behaviors that affect their overall wellbeing and decision making.
The team emphasized that engaging in gaming as a minor exposes students to long term social and financial consequences. Learners were encouraged to focus on their education and to seek support when faced with peer pressure or financial temptations linked to betting.

Speaking at the forum, Agnes Nakazibwe, Head Teacher of Masindi Secondary School said: “We need our learners to maintain a focused and disciplined mindset. If their attention becomes preoccupied with activities such as betting, it will inevitably affect their concentration and hinder their academic progress,”
The safety campaign ran across two major districts in Uganda namely: Masindi and Kiryandongo districts. Ultimately NLGR managed to talk with more than 10,000 students in more than 10 schools across Masindi and Kiryandongo.
Some of the schools engaged included Masindi Army Secondary School, Masindi Secondary School, Kigumba Intensive Secondary School, Green Valley Secondary School, Iman Secondary School, among others.
NLGR is working to support a stable economy while prioritizing awareness among young people about the risks of gambling. Furthermore, Its school initiatives protect minors and promote responsible behavior beyond the classroom.
