LSLGA Reaffirms Commitment to Sports Development and Lagos’ Maritime Heritage at 2026 Governor’s Cup Regatta
Authority celebrates nine decades of sailing tradition as Lagos Yacht Club’s prestigious Governor’s Cup showcases the State’s aquatic heritage, sporting excellence and tourism potential.
Lagos, Nigeria — 20 October 2026. The Lagos State Lotteries and Gaming Authority (LSLGA) has reaffirmed its commitment to sports development, tourism promotion, and the preservation of Lagos State’s rich maritime heritage through its sponsorship of the 2026 Lagos Yacht Club Governor’s Cup Regatta, held on Saturday, 17 October 2026, at the historic Lagos Yacht Club, Onikan.
The prestigious annual sailing competition, hosted in honour of the Governor of Lagos State, brought together sailing enthusiasts, distinguished personalities, corporate stakeholders, and members of the maritime community in a celebration of sporting excellence, tradition, and the enduring relationship between Lagos and its waterways.
Speaking at the event, the Chief Executive Officer of the LSLGA, Mr. Bashir Abiola Are, reflected on the remarkable history of the Lagos Yacht Club, describing its nine-decade legacy as an important chapter in the sporting and social evolution of Lagos State.
He noted that the Club’s continued existence and the sustained tradition of the Governor’s Cup represent more than recreational achievement; they demonstrate the importance of preserving institutions that connect generations, promote community spirit, and contribute to the identity of Lagos as a vibrant coastal metropolis.
“The Lagos Yacht Club represents an extraordinary part of our State’s history. For approximately 90 years, this institution has sustained a tradition that celebrates our relationship with the waters surrounding us. What makes this legacy particularly remarkable is its continuity, the ability of successive generations to preserve the spirit of sailing, sportsmanship and community while adapting to the changing character of Lagos.
“The Governor’s Cup is therefore not merely a sporting competition. It is a celebration of heritage, resilience, and the enduring values that have shaped Lagos into the dynamic city we know today,” Mr. Are remarked.
The CEO further emphasised that aquatic sports occupy a unique position in Lagos State’s development, particularly given the State’s extensive coastline, lagoons, creeks, and waterways, which offer enormous opportunities for recreation, competitive sports, tourism, and economic activity.
According to him, Lagos possesses the natural advantages required to become a leading destination for aquatic sports in Africa, provided that deliberate efforts continue to be made towards developing sporting infrastructure, encouraging private-sector participation and introducing younger generations to water-based recreational activities.
He observed that sailing and other aquatic sports contribute significantly to the diversification of Lagos’ sporting landscape, creating opportunities beyond conventional sports while supporting hospitality, tourism, marine services, and related businesses.
“Our waterways are among Lagos State’s greatest natural assets. Beyond their importance to transportation and commerce, they provide tremendous opportunities for sports, leisure, tourism and youth development.
“When we support competitions such as the Governor’s Cup, we are also supporting an ecosystem that creates economic opportunities, attracts visitors, encourages sporting talent and strengthens Lagos’ reputation as a world-class waterfront destination.

“We must continue to build a future where our young people see aquatic sports not simply as recreational activities, but as avenues for personal development, professional achievement and international recognition,” he added.
Mr. Are also commended the Lagos Yacht Club for maintaining the Governor’s Cup tradition, noting that the ability to sustain such an institution across generations reflects the dedication of its members and the enduring relevance of organised sporting communities to the cultural fabric of Lagos.
He stressed that preserving longstanding sporting institutions is essential to maintaining the historical character of a rapidly developing city, particularly as Lagos continues to expand its international profile as a destination for investment, tourism and entertainment.
The Authority’s sponsorship of the 2026 Governor’s Cup forms part of its broader commitment to supporting good causes and socially beneficial initiatives across Lagos State.
As the agency responsible for regulating lotteries and gaming activities within the State, the LSLGA recognises that its public responsibilities extend beyond licensing, compliance and consumer protection to supporting initiatives that deliver meaningful social value.
Through strategic interventions in sports, education, community development and other public-interest programmes, the Authority continues to demonstrate how responsible gaming regulation can contribute to wider socioeconomic development.
The CEO explained that the Authority’s involvement in the Governor’s Cup aligns with the vision of the Lagos State Government, under the leadership of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, to promote tourism, entertainment, youth engagement and sustainable economic opportunities.
He noted that events of this nature complement the State Government’s broader efforts to position Lagos as Africa’s preferred destination for business, leisure and cultural experiences.
“Sports have a remarkable ability to bring people together, transcend boundaries and create lasting connections. The Governor’s Cup exemplifies these qualities, and we are pleased to support an event that celebrates excellence while preserving an important aspect of Lagos’ heritage.
“At the LSLGA, we believe that the true measure of a regulatory institution is not only how effectively it regulates its sector, but also the positive difference it makes in the society it serves,” Mr. Are stated.
The 2026 Governor’s Cup further reinforced the importance of collaboration between public institutions and established sporting organisations in advancing Lagos State’s developmental aspirations.
For the LSLGA, the sponsorship represents an investment in the continuity of a cherished sporting tradition, the promotion of responsible recreation and the strengthening of Lagos’ identity as a city whose history, economy and future remain deeply connected to its waterways.
As the Lagos Yacht Club continues its journey beyond nine decades of maritime tradition, the Authority reaffirmed its belief that preserving the legacies of yesterday while creating opportunities for tomorrow remains essential to building a greater Lagos.
