Mamelodi Sundowns Women are the New Continental Champions
On Sunday, Mamelodi Sundowns emerged champions in the CAF Women Champions League final, defeating SC Casablanca from Morocco with a resounding 3-0 score. This is the club’s second Champions League win in three years.
The win saw Mamelodi regain their title in Cote d’Ivoire with a fantastic performance by top scorer Tholakele Refilwe, who netted twice, and Boitumelo Rabale, who added another goal to secure the victory. This win helped the team reclaim the championship they had lost the previous year.
South Africa’s outstanding performance in Cote d’Ivoire not only allowed them to regain the title they had lost to AS FAR the previous season, but also established a new record by winning the championship without allowing a single goal.
The amazing victory on Sunday evening was recorded at the bustling Amadou Gon Coulibaly Stadium in Korhogo. The South Africans, led by the tournament’s leading scorer Tholakele Refilwe, secured the championship title with a 3-0 win against SC Casablanca from Morocco. Boitumelo Rabale also contributed with a goal, sealing an unforgettable triumph in this historic moment.
After previously clashing in the group stages where Sundowns secured a 1-0 victory, this marked the second encounter between the two sides in the tournament.
Sundowns wasted no time in getting numbers forward, clearly intent on reclaiming the title. Their efforts were immediately rewarded in the 21st minute when Refilwe successfully converted a penalty.
Shortly thereafter, Rabale skillfully extended South Africa’s advantage to a two-goal lead just before halftime with a perfectly executed strike from outside the penalty area, nestling the ball into the bottom corner.
Upon resuming the game after the recess, the Moroccans made an effort to revive their contest, only to face a determined Sundowns defense that effectively foiled all their offensive endeavors.
With a strong surge of momentum, the South Africans solidified their victory as Tholakele’s goal in the 78th minute sealed the match, leaving the Moroccans with no chance of a comeback. This outstanding performance secured a second CAF Women’s Champions League title for Sundowns, along with a generous $400,000 winner’s prize.
