NLA Calls for Africa-Europe Collaborations to Nab Illegal Gambling at the 2026 European Lotteries (EL)Industry Days in Marrakesh, Morocco.

The Director-General of the National Lottery Authority (NLA), Mr. Mohammed Abdul-Salam, has called for stronger collaboration among lottery and gaming stakeholders across Africa and Europe to intensify the fight against illegal gambling at the 2026 European Lotteries (EL) Industry Days in Marrakesh, Morocco, on 8 June 2026.

The event, was held under the theme “Lotteries Bridging Continents.” It provided a platform for stakeholders to share best practices, explore digital innovations and promote responsible gaming. It also provided a platform for development of strategies to address illegal gambling across jurisdictions.

At the conference Mr. Abdul-Salam addressed over 200 participants from Europe and Africa. He emphasized the growing threat illegal gambling poses to national economies and citizens. Abdul highlighted the significant revenue losses suffered by countries such as Ghana, Benin, and South Africa. He noted that Ghana alone loses more than GH¢1 billion annually to illegal lottery activities.

The Vice President of the African Lotteries Association (ALA),outlined several measures being pursued by Ghana to combat the menace. These include: The deployment of technology to tackle lottery fraud and the introduction of advanced POS machines for retailers. Also stronger enforcement of Responsible Gaming principles and amendments to the National Lotto Act. Also the expansion of Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives.

Mr. Mohammed Abdul-Salam’s participation at the EL Industry Days 2026 underscored NLA’s dedication to protecting the integrity of the lottery industry and safeguarding national revenue.
