MAGLA Opens 2026 Applications for Sports Betting and Land-Based Casino Licences

The Malawi Gaming and Lotteries Authority (MAGLA) has officially invited qualified local and foreign applicants to apply for the sports betting licences and land-based casino licences.
MAGLA was established under the Gaming and Lotteries Act of 2022. These invitations, issued pursuant to the Act, mark a significant milestone in the Authority’s regulatory cycle leading up to 2026.
The application process for sports betting and land-based casino licenses in Malawi for 2026 involves acquiring the official Request for Proposals (RFP) documents, which have been available since 8th June 2026. Local applicants are required to pay a non-refundable application fee of K2,000,000, while foreign applicants must pay USD 1,500. The non-refundable fee for the casino license category is K500,000.
After obtaining the RFP documents, applicants must prepare complete proposals as specified, including all prescribed application forms, relevant supporting documentation, and proof of payment for the application fee. The submission deadlines are 10th July 2026 at 16:30 hours for sports betting applications and 15th July 2026 at 16:30 hours for land-based casino applications.

Once received, applications will undergo a rigorous assessment process, during which MAGLA will conduct regulatory due diligence, evaluating the applicants’ fit and proper status, financial integrity, and beneficial ownership. Evaluation will be strictly in accordance with the criteria outlined in the Gaming and Lotteries Act, applicable regulations, and the specific RFP.
Payment details are available on the MAGLA website. Applications should be submitted either in sealed envelopes delivered to MAGLA’s office in Blantyre or via email to licenceapplications@magla.org.mw. Envelopes for casino applications must be clearly marked “APPLICATION FOR LAND-BASED CASINO LICENCE – 2026.”
