NLGRB Confiscates 209 Illegal Gambling Machines Across Uganda

Uganda’s National Lotteries and Gaming Regulatory Board (NLGRB) has confiscated 209 illegal gaming machines across Busia, Tororo, Butebo, Pallisa, Budaka, Kibuku, and Ntungamo districts.

The enforcement operation was conducted with support from the Uganda Police Force under the Board’s #OperationMashineHaramu initiative, a nationwide campaign targeting unlicensed gaming operations and the use of unauthorised gaming machines.

The name “Mashine Haramu” is a Swahili phrase meaning “illegal machines”. The initiative also targets illegal gaming operators, manufacturers, and suppliers involved in unauthorised gaming activities.

Through Operation Mashine Haramu, the Board continues to work with law enforcement agencies and local communities to identify illegal operators, manufacturers, and suppliers, while encouraging the public to report suspected violations. This ongoing collaboration is reflected in the NLGRB’s thanks to the District Police Commanders (DPCs) for their continued support in combating illegal gaming.

Under Uganda’s Lotteries and Gaming Act, operators are required to obtain the necessary licences and regulatory approvals before conducting gaming activities or making gaming machines available for public use. The NLGRB is mandated to license, regulate, and supervise the country’s lotteries, gaming, and betting industry, including taking enforcement action against unauthorised operations.
