NLGRB Targets boda boda Riders in Uganda with Responsible Gaming Campaign

On March 8, 2026, the National Lotteries and Gaming Regulatory Board (NLGRB) launched a responsible gaming awareness campaign aimed at boda boda riders across Uganda.

The campaign’s primary goal was to reinforce the message that gaming should remain a form of entertainment, not a source of income or primary livelihood. Officials from the NLGRB engaged directly with riders, offering practical guidance on how to participate in gaming activities safely and responsibly.

Boda boda riders were chosen as a priority audience due to their high mobility and influential role within the community. Their participation in responsible gaming is vital for promoting positive behavior nationwide. The outreach activities were held at several busy boda boda stages, including Kireka, Luzira, Kinawattaka, and Portbell, where riders paused their routines to participate in discussions.

The campaign provided an open platform for riders to share personal experiences and ask questions about responsible gaming practices. This interactive approach aimed to foster understanding and encourage responsible behavior.

Susan Hope, the Senior Responsible Gaming Officer of the NLGRB, emphasized the importance of balance, “Responsible gaming is about balance. Our outreach ensures that communities understand both the enjoyment and the limits of gaming.”

To deepen the campaign’s impact, the NLGRB was joined by Ivan Musenero, a mental health expert from Butabika National Referral Hospital. Musenero highlighted, “Responsible gaming begins with awareness. When people understand that gaming should remain entertainment, not a coping mechanism or a source of income, they are far more likely to stay in control.”

This outreach forms a key part of the NLGRB’s mandate under the Lotteries and Gaming Act No. 7 of 2016. The Board is committed to establishing a fair, transparent, and well-regulated gaming sector that safeguards Ugandans from potential negative impacts while fostering sustainable growth.

Through these community-based sensitization campaigns, the NLGRB aims to foster a culture of informed decision-making and responsible participation in gaming across the country.
