NWGB Destroys 142 Illegal Gambling Machines in Mahikeng
The North West Gambling Board (NWGB) has destroyed 142 illegal gambling machines at a scrap yard in Mahikeng.
The crackdown specifically targeted confiscated machines found in tuck shops and informal businesses. Authorities highlighted that these locations make gambling far too accessible to children and other vulnerable community members, who are most at risk from the harmful effects of unregulated gaming.
By removing these machines from local neighborhoods, the Board aims to provide a safer environment for residents. This decisive move is part of an ongoing provincial strategy to wipe out illegal gambling activities across all four districts of the North West Province.

During the demolition event, Acting CEO Mr. Boitumelo Qalinge emphasized that the Board has a legal mandate to eradicate these operations. He issued a stern warning to local entrepreneurs, urging them to reject any offers to host illegal machines on their property.
He said: “As the Board, we have a legal duty to implement various strategies to eradicate illegal gambling. We also urge business owners to reject any offers to host these illegal machines. Operating or allowing these machines on business premises is a direct contravention of Section 82(1) of the North West Gambling Act, 2001.”
