SARGF Promotes Responsible Gambling Awareness in Free State
The South African Responsible Gambling Foundation (SARGF), in collaboration with the Free State Gambling and Racing Board (FSGLTA), recently conducted an awareness-raising initiative, taking its player-protection message directly to communities across the Free State.
The campaign’s core strategy involves ongoing punter activations. Regulators and foundation representatives visit local communities and licensed gambling venues to speak directly with players about their gambling habits, highlight potential risks, and promote ways to protect their well-being.
A central focus is helping residents distinguish between legal and illegal gambling operations. Officials warn communities about unregulated machines, often found in informal taverns and local tuckshops, which operate without consumer protections, age restrictions, or oversight.
This provincial outreach comes amid significant changes in South Africa’s broader gambling environment. According to the National Gambling Board, industry turnover reached approximately R1.5 trillion in the 2024/25 financial year, amid a shift towards online and mobile betting.

The rapid growth of online betting has also raised socioeconomic concerns. The National Responsible Gambling Programme (NRGP) counselling line reportedly received 1.1 million calls in the 2024/25 financial year. Economic hardship has led some workers, young adults, and social grant recipients to view betting as a source of income rather than entertainment. In foundation surveys, more than 83% of problem gamblers reported increasing personal debt. In response, the SARGF and advertising regulators are pursuing tighter controls on aggressive digital marketing.
Run under the banner of the NRGP, the initiative reinforces the message that gambling addiction can cause harm, but recovery is possible. Comprehensive, confidential clinical care, support groups, and professional counselling are available to affected individuals and their families.
