NWGB, DEDECT, and SARGF Raise Gambling-Harm Awareness Among Youth at Baphiring Agricultural Hub
The North West Gambling Board (NWGB), in collaboration with the Consumer Affairs Unit of the Department of Economic Development, Environment, Conservation and Tourism (DEDECT) and the South African Responsible Gambling Foundation (SARGF), engaged with the Baphiring Agricultural Hub in Ga-Phiri, within the Mabaalstad region of Moses Kotane Local Municipality, to raise awareness among young adults about the risks associated with gambling.
In response to the growing risks linked to the growth of gambling, regulatory authorities and public health organizations are implementing targeted community interventions alongside national clinical support frameworks to safeguard young people and promote long-term financial resilience in South Africa. One example is the “Protect Your Money. Protect Your Future.” initiative.
The choice of location reflects an effort to integrate financial protection into existing socioeconomic development channels. The Baphiring Agricultural Hub serves as a community anchor, offering services such as sustainable agriculture, vocational training, food-service entrepreneurship, and construction skills to improve rural livelihoods and employability. By holding gambling-awareness workshops in an environment focused on youth vocational empowerment, organizers aimed to connect financial literacy with income protection.
The campaign emphasizes that young people should avoid risky wagering to protect their personal incomes and future prospects.

Local organizers and community leaders welcomed the intervention, noting that technical training should be paired with financial-protection knowledge. Community advocates also called for expanded programming, including youth-focused workshops, training for parents and local leaders to identify early warning signs of problem gambling, and ongoing recreational activities to keep young residents constructively engaged.
