Calls for a ban of Tiktok in Kenya

Bob Ndolo, Executive Officer of Bridget Connect Consultancy, petitioned the Kenyan government for a ban on Tiktok, citing the app’s detrimental effects on the nation’s cultural and religious values. Tiktok ban Kenya

These are some of the claims in the petition:

  • TikTok exposes young people to graphic sexual information that is against national moral and religious traditions.
  • TikTok encourages inappropriate behavior, hate speech, inflammatory language, and violent imagery that could cause instability and conflict in the country. Ndolo gave a number of instances of videos that he believed to be detrimental or insulting, including those that depict nudity, sexual activity, drug use, homosexuality, blasphemy, or insults to national figures or leaders.
  • Minors that use TikTok have also been the subject of privacy and security concerns, with claims that the platform collects data on them without their knowledge or consent.
  • The official agency in charge of regulating the telecoms industry in Kenya, the Communications Authority of Kenya, decried the absence of effective internet content regulation and requested steps be taken to safeguard the welfare and interests of the general population.
  • He forewarned that if the app is not outlawed in Kenya, youth mental health problems, including depression, anxiety, and sleep deprivation, will increase and academic performance will suffer.

In response to the petition, the majority leader, Kimani Ichung’wa, claimed that because the app has given the majority of young people jobs, parliament cannot preside over its suspension.

The petitioner should come to seek on how to regulate the usage of the app, age group and content uploaded for a certain age to watch, outright banning would be killing careers of many young people who are earning a living through it.

These apps are part of the government effort where young men and women can create content for use in Tiktok and snap chat to earn a living.

The Speaker of the House charged the Public Petitions Committee with investigating Tiktok. The group has 60 days to report, and based on its suggestions, the issue will either be discussed or rejected.
