NWGB joins the Department of Health’s Operational Health and Safety Wellness Day to promote employee well-being

The North West Gambling Board (NWGB) recently joined the Department of Health’s Operational Health and Safety Wellness Day to promote employee well-being.

The key message for the occasion was that true wellness starts with making informed choices, particularly regarding activities like gambling that can impact every aspect of a person’s life.

The NWGB emphasized that understanding the risks begins with understanding the brain. Gambling activates dopamine, the “feel-good” chemical that creates intense feelings of excitement and anticipation. However, the danger lies in chasing that rush, which can rapidly transition from a form of entertainment into problem gambling.

While social gambling is often regarded as a form of simple entertainment, problem gambling can carry a heavy price tag. It is not merely a financial issue, it can lead to reduced work performance and productivity, financial hardship, and the dangerous cycle of borrowing money to gamble.

Additionally, problem gambling can strain relationships with family and colleagues and may result in addictive behaviors, along with a decline in both physical and mental health. Ultimately, the consequences of losing control can cost an individual their career, their family, and their future.

The NWGB emphasizes that by promoting responsible choices, “Together, we can build healthier workplaces, stronger families, and safer communities through informed choices.” Recognizing the signs of problem gambling is the first step toward recovery and maintaining a professional environment.
