North West Gambling Board Joins SAPS and NPA to Intensify Crackdown on Unlawful Operations
On the 27th of August, 2026, the North West Gambling Board (NWGB) joined the South African Police Services (SAPS) and the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in a training session aimed at strengthening cooperation on criminal investigations and prosecutions.
This strategic gathering brought together key stakeholders from across the criminal justice system to address complex legal and investigative challenges, particularly those surrounding organised crime and criminal technology activity.
The engagement focused on areas considered critical towards effective investigation and prosecution of iGaming criminal activities. Amongst that were the 48-hour rule, the non-enrolment of matters, the search and seizure of evidence in cybercrime cases, and the application of statutory racketeering provisions to effectively combat organised criminal networks.
During the session, North West Gambling Board representative Simon Mogapi delivered a focused presentation outlining the severe impact of illegal gambling throughout the province. Mogapi characterised unlicensed gambling as a major criminal threat, emphasising that unregulated enterprises create fertile ground for money laundering schemes and organised crime networks while inflicting direct financial losses and broader social harms on local communities. He further stressed the absence of essential consumer protections in illegal gambling markets, leaving citizens vulnerable without the regulatory safeguards guaranteed by licensed operations.
While acknowledging past joint enforcement efforts with law enforcement and prosecutorial authorities, Mogapi called for an even tighter institutional alignment to swiftly detect illicit operations, build airtight cases, and secure convictions that disrupt criminal syndicates. Reaffirming its stance, the North West Gambling Board confirmed it will maintain an ongoing, coordinated partnership with the police and public prosecutors to enforce compliance and safeguard the integrity of the provincial gambling regulatory framework.

This training comes after a sharp rise in illicit gambling activities across South Africa. Unauthorised operators have increasingly exploited digital platforms and hidden physical venues to bypass strict regulatory standards.
Beyond draining crucial provincial tax revenues, these unregulated entities expose vulnerable players to predatory practices and sever the critical safety net that legal frameworks provide. Previous enforcement measures saw law enforcement agencies and provincial regulators confiscate hundreds of illegal slot machines, execute targeted raids on unlicensed gambling taverns, and launch widespread community awareness drives to caution residents about the dangers of illegal betting.
Despite these efforts, underground syndicates have continued to adapt, prompting authorities to shift toward deeper institutional alignment rather than relying solely on isolated raids. Through it all, the North West Gambling Board has remained firmly dedicated to promoting responsible gambling.
