Sportpesa Partners with Tanzania Rugby Union for Rugby Growth

SportPesa is enhancing its commitment to African sports through a new partnership with the Tanzania Rugby Union (TRU), which will promote rugby growth from local to national levels.

As a result of the partnership, SportPesa will officially sponsor the National Rugby Sevens Circuit, which has been renamed the SportPesa National Saba Circuit. SportPesa will assist the circuit over the duration of the five-month campaign with efforts to encourage rugby talent and development as well as tournament awareness, fan interaction, content, and on-the-ground activations.

The partnership builds on SportPesa’s broader support for rugby across the continent, which includes its ongoing involvement in the growth of the sport in South Africa and Kenya. In Tanzania, the investment focuses on strengthening the people and systems that support the game. SportPesa is also supporting Tanzania’s men’s national team, the Twiga Kings, as they travel to South Africa to participate in the Obaro 7s in October.

SportPesa and TRU recently held a Rugby Level One training session at the University of Dar es Salaam under the direction of Robert Bwali of Rugby Africa as part of this strategy. Match officials, technical personnel, and coaches from all over Tanzania came together for classroom and hands-on training aimed at improving their comprehension of the game.

The domestic sevens game has also received more attention as a result of the partnership. Eleven men’s and women’s teams participated in a day of rugby at the Leaders Club fields during the second leg of the 2026 SportPesa National Saba Circuit, Dar Rugby Saba. Free entry helped draw  spectators closer to the action. TV3 Sports livestreamed the matches and highlights were live on Azam and StarTimes.

The partnership represents SportPesa’s larger dedication to leveraging sports sponsorship to generate possibilities for coaches, athletes, and communities. SportPesa and TRU are bolstering the groundwork for rugby’s sustained expansion in Tanzania by promoting competitive rugby in addition to training and development.
