Celebrating 2024’s Top 50 Most Influential Women in Gaming, Africa: Angela Mwelu
Angela Mwelu was born and raised in a vibrant community that celebrated education and innovation. Passionate about technology and its potential to drive social change, she pursued higher learning with determination.
Angela earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Applied Business Computing from the University of Sunderland, which provided her with a foundational understanding of both business and technology. To further advance her skills, she enrolled in prestigious leadership programs, including the Oxford Executive Leadership Programme at Saïd Business School, University of Oxford, and the Senior Management Leadership Program at both Nanyang Business School and Strathmore Business School.
Angela’s professional career began in 2001 with a series of internships that allowed her to gain exposure to diverse areas, including international development at UNICEF France and various IT analyst roles. In 2005, she joined DXC Technology, where she spent over five years advancing through different positions, including Multilingual IT Analyst and Production Integration Manager.
In 2010, Angela transitioned to Seven Seas Technologies, serving as Service Delivery and Support Manager and further solidifying her expertise in IT services. She then moved to HAKKEN, initially as Business Development Manager and later as a Partner, where she demonstrated her exceptional ability to build relationships and expand business opportunities.

In 2016, Angela took a significant step forward in her career by joining Mastercard as the Director of Strategic Ecosystems for Sub-Saharan Africa, where she played a critical role in promoting Mastercard’s payment solutions, enhancing their acceptance and issuance across the region. After a successful tenure, she joined Ingenico in 2019 as Area Business Head for East Africa, responsible for market expansion across several countries, including Kenya, Uganda, and Ethiopia. During her time there, Angela played a key role in the merger with Worldline, contributing to the establishment of one of the world’s largest payment services companies.
Following her success at Ingenico, Angela Mwelu became the Regional Director for East and Francophone Africa at LexisNexis Risk Solutions in 2022, focusing on revenue growth and market expansion in risk management solutions, particularly in anti-money laundering and fraud monitoring.
Most recently, in March 2024, Angela was appointed as the Senior Vice President of Business Development for Africa at Sharp Vision, further showcasing her leadership in driving financial inclusion and innovative tech solutions across the continent, mostly targeting regulators across the gambling space in Africa.
Known as an out-of-the-box thinker and results-oriented professional, Angela has over 15 years of experience in strategy, leadership, and IT solutions delivery. Currently, Angela is serving a purpose to ensure that gaming regulators across Africa can effectively regulate the industry by incorporating technological aspects within their systems, further demonstrating her commitment to fostering innovation and responsible governance in emerging markets.
