GrandWest Casino Reveals Opulent New Salon Privé After R30-Million Revamp
Cape Town’s GrandWest Casino’s Grand Hotel has lifted the curtain on its newly refurbished Salon Privé, the first completed phase of a R30-million transformation of the iconic Grand Hotel. The new space combines classic elegance with contemporary design, offering guests an exclusive setting to dine, relax, and play.
Mervyn Naidoo, General Manager at GrandWest, said the renovation had been years in the making and gained new momentum following the hotel’s recent expansion.
“This project was envisioned long before the pandemic but was delayed by Covid restrictions,” Naidoo explained. “Once we expanded the Grand Hotel to more than twice its previous size, refreshing our premium spaces became a top priority. We wanted to create not just more room, but an immersive, memorable experience for our guests — and our design team delivered on that vision.”

The revamp was spearheaded by David Muirhead & Associates, a leading interior design firm known for luxury hotels and boutique retreats across South Africa.
Muirhead described the process as one of transformation rather than reinvention. “The original structure had great character,” he said. “Gaming is at the heart of GrandWest, and the new Salon Privé is a playground for enthusiasts and high-rollers alike. It features 144 slot machines (with more to come), 17 Baccarat, Blackjack, Poker and Roulette tables, and curved LED screens custom-made for GrandWest. For high-stakes players, the Captain’s Cabin and Private Room offer discretion, luxury, and opulent décor, including a custom dragon chandelier.
The redesigned interior centres around a dual-access bar that connects the Union Castle dining room with the Salon Privé, encouraging a sense of openness and sociability. Rich navy tones, gold trims, and plush velvet furnishings evoke a modern maritime charm — a subtle tribute to Cape Town’s seafaring legacy.
The refreshed Salon Privé now offers a refined yet comfortable escape for guests, blending heritage-inspired design with contemporary sophistication. The unveiling marks the first step in GrandWest’s larger redevelopment plan, aimed at reimagining one of Cape Town’s most recognisable entertainment destinations.
