NCGLB Raids and Confiscates Chinese Roulette Machines in Griekwastad and Barkley West

The Northern Cape Gambling Board and Liquor Board (NCGLB) recently coordinated with Crime Intelligence and South African Police Service (SAPS) units to conduct targeted raids against unlawful gambling operations in Griekwastad and Barkley West.

This intelligence-driven enforcement operation focused on tuckshops offering unlicensed gambling devices, specifically Chinese roulette machines, which provide unlicensed services to members of the public.

Following months of intelligence gathering at local tuckshops, a total of 11 illegal Chinese roulette machines were confiscated, six in Griekwastad and five in Barkley West. Additionally, law enforcement officials opened 11 inquiry dockets to investigate these activities, with six in Griekwastad and five in Barkley West.

Executing its statutory mandate under Section 21 of the NCGL Act 6 of 2024, the primary goal of this initiative is to enforce regulatory compliance, dismantle unlicensed gambling operations in residential areas, and protect young people from the serious risks associated with underage gambling.

Mr. Modise Letselebe, NCGLB Chief Executive Officer, emphasised that no tuckshop is legally permitted to operate gambling machines, reaffirming the Board’s commitment to eradicating these unlawful operations entirely.

The board also raised concerns on the rising incidence of underage gambling. Unlicensed gambling involving minors carries severe legal penalties, as well as financial and psychological consequences that can damage a young person’s future prospects.

To develop a comprehensive, long-term response across the province, the NCGLB is advancing several strategic initiatives under its #Wecomply campaign. This includes planning the creation of “The Illegal Gambling Task Team of the Law Enforcement,” which will partner directly with the National Prosecuting Authority of South Africa (NPA), SAPS, and local municipalities to formulate a strategic way forward. The Board is also committed to maintaining active engagement with municipalities throughout the Northern Cape to prevent the expansion of illegal gambling.
