NLGRB Announces Exit of MelBet from the Ugandan Market

The National Lotteries and Gaming Regulatory Board (NLGRB) of Uganda has officially announced that Fox Bet Limited, trading as MelBet, has ceased operations in Uganda and is no longer licensed to offer gaming services in the country.
According to a public notice issued under Section 4(j) of the Lotteries and Gaming Act, Cap. 334, the regulator confirmed that MelBet’s licence became invalid effective 1 January 2026. The notice, dated 5 January 2026, serves as a formal warning to the public and all affected players.
The NLGRB has strongly advised players who previously held accounts with MelBet to withdraw any remaining funds without delay and close their betting accounts with the operator. This move is intended to protect consumers from potential financial losses following the operator’s exit from the regulated market. In its statement, the regulator reiterated that engaging with unlicensed gaming operators poses significant risks, including the possible loss of funds and the absence of legal recourse in the event of disputes. The Board emphasized that only operators licensed by the NLGRB are legally permitted to provide gaming services in Uganda.

The decision follows the NLGRB’s 2026 licence renewal process, which required operators to submit their applications by 31 October 2025, along with proof of tax clearance and full compliance with the Lotteries and Gaming Act. Players and stakeholders are encouraged to regularly verify the licensing status of gaming operators through official channels to ensure they are engaging with compliant and regulated entities.
