Rwanda Development Board Announces Temporary Suspension of New Gaming Licenses

09/08/2024 KIGALI, Rwanda – In a significant move impacting the gaming industry, the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) has announced a temporary suspension of the issuance of new gaming licenses and the renewal of expired licenses.

This decision follows the Prime Minister’s Order No. 028/03, issued on June 28, 2024, which established the RDB as the regulatory authority for all gaming activities in the country.

The RDB has stated that this suspension is part of a broader initiative to review and revise the policies governing gaming activities in Rwanda. The organization is committed to ensuring that the regulation of these activities aligns with the latest standards and practices.

“In our capacity as the new regulatory authority, we are leading the overhaul of the policy framework for gaming activities in Rwanda,” explained Francis Gatare, Chief Executive Officer of RDB. “We recognize the importance of these regulations in maintaining fair and responsible gaming standards, and we are dedicated to finalizing this process as swiftly as possible.”

Potential applicants and current license holders are advised that they will need to wait for the new policy approval before they can apply for new licenses or renew existing ones. RDB assures the public that updates regarding the progress of this policy review will be communicated through its official channels.

This announcement comes just days before the inauguration of Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame, who is set to begin his fourth term following a resounding 99% victory in the recent election. This timing suggests a strategic effort to realign regulatory frameworks with the administration’s vision for a responsible and accountable gaming environment in the country.
