Tunisia Gears Up to Host Global Game Jam 2026

Tunisia is set to host multiple sites for the Global Game Jam (GGJ) 2026, bringing together developers, designers, and creative technologists from across Africa and the world for a weekend of collaborative game creation.

The event, scheduled from January 30 to February 1, 2026, is a 48-hour intensive jam where teams brainstorm, prototype, and present playable games based on a theme revealed shortly before the event begins. Executive Director Maria Burns Ortiz described the jam as “a celebration of creativity, innovation, and community.” While the jam officially runs from Jan. 26 to Feb. 1, most sites are expected to host their sessions over the Jan. 30 to Feb. 1 weekend.

Tunisia will serve as the site for several GGJ 2026 locations in Tunis, notably at Elgazala Technopark and Cité de la Culture, offering participants spaces to collaborate, learn, and innovate. The event highlights Tunisia’s growing role as a center for technology and creative industries in Africa. Beyond game development, GGJ provides opportunities for skill-building, professional networking, and international exposure for the country’s emerging digital talent. Meanwhile, the Tunisian Esports Federation has been actively expanding the local competitive gaming scene, integrating new clubs into its national framework, reflecting Tunisia’s wider commitment to nurturing interactive entertainment and fostering gaming communities across the country.

The Global Game Jam is also approaching a major milestone, with the 2026 edition expected to push total participation past 500,000 since its inception. Typically, around 40,000 participants join each year, collaborating at roughly 800 sites in over 100 countries.

Since its launch in 2009, GGJ has become one of the largest recurring gatherings of game developers, promoting experimentation, teamwork, and rapid prototyping. In 2025, the jam surpassed 100,000 total games created, further underscoring its global impact and role as a platform for connecting creative minds worldwide.
