Zambia Gaming Association Inspects Betting Companies to Combat Illegal Gambling Concerns

The Zambia Gaming Association (ZGA) recently announced a nationwide enforcement campaign to inspect betting and gaming companies to ensure they are operating within the law.

Zambia has experienced a significant rise in sports betting and gambling activities, driven by digital growth, mobile connectivity, and a passion for sports like football. This has made online betting accessible, especially to young adults aged 18–35 using mobile money, turning the sector into a major revenue source. In response, the government introduced a 10% excise tax and increased regulation However, concerns about gambling addiction, financial risks, and underage gambling exposure have grown, prompting calls for stronger rules, responsible gaming, and consumer protection.

The Zambia Gaming Association has warned that if these issues are not urgently addressed, serious social consequences could follow. Therefore, the association has begun nationwide inspections of betting companies to ensure legal compliance and curb illegal gambling, emphasizing the rising problem of addiction and its long-term harm to families and communities.

ZGA President Noah Malungila stated that many companies are currently operating without fully complying with the law. He warned that gambling addiction is increasing and that failure to enforce regulations could lead to serious social problems in the future.

It has come to the attention of the authority that there have been many negative issues in the way this business is conducted in the country. Additionally, these issues have been compounded by tax evasion, where compliance is not observed,” said Malungila.

The inspections will be a joint effort involving several enforcement agencies, including the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC), the Immigration Department, and local councils. Any illegal gaming machines discovered during the exercise will be confiscated and stored in designated council-approved warehouses.

ZGA Secretary General Darius Sinkamba confirmed that enforcement teams will be on the ground immediately and warned that operators found breaking the law will face regulatory action. He emphasized that compliance is necessary to protect the integrity and sustainability of the gambling market.

We will be conducting inspections nationwide to ensure that every operator complies with the law,” Sinkamba emphasized.

This crackdown follows a recent meeting between the ZGA and officials from the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development, aimed at strengthening sector oversight. This increased regulatory pressure comes as Zambia’s betting sector expands due to the rising popularity of sports betting and digital gaming platforms.
