1xCare’s Chris Bird Delivers Media Training for 1xCup Clubs

LAGOS, NIGERIA – [8 August] – More than 100 media officers registered for an interactive online media and communications workshop delivered on July 29, 2026, by Chris Bird, a member of the 1xCare Advisory Committee, for clubs participating in 1xCup.
Founded in 2023, 1xCup is a grassroots football tournament in Lagos involving this year 100 clubs across five divisions. It provides emerging players with a competitive platform, greater visibility, and access to scouting opportunities and potential pathways into professional football.

Titled “Helping Football Tell Better Stories,” the workshop equipped club representatives with practical tools to improve communication with supporters, journalists, sponsors, and local communities.
Drawing on more than three decades of experience in sports media, brand storytelling, and communications strategy, Bird covered club storytelling, media relations, matchday communications, photography, social media, and responsible crisis response. The session combined practical guidance for media officers from participating 1xCup clubs with live polls, discussions, and exercises based on the communications challenges faced by participating clubs.
“Every club has a story, whatever its size or budget,” said Bird. “This workshop was about helping clubs find those stories and tell them clearly, accurately, and with confidence. Good communication can create opportunities for players, bring supporters closer, and help the whole club build a stronger profile.”
The session received highly positive feedback. One participant described it as an “inspiring experience” and praised the knowledge shared, the valuable insights provided, and the opportunity to learn and grow.
The workshop supports 1xCare’s mission to advance player protection and responsible gambling through research, education, technology, player well-being, and collaborative partnerships. It also reflects the organization’s commitment to using education to promote greater awareness, stronger standards, and more responsible practices across sport and its surrounding communities.
Further educational programs will be offered as 1xCare continues to develop its EduCare activities. Additional initiatives will be announced as their scope and partnerships are confirmed.
