South Sudan’s Gogrial East County Enforces Gambling and Dominoes Ban

In a bold move aimed at tackling youth idleness and unproductive behaviour, the newly appointed County Commissioner of Gogrial East County in South Sudan, William Dechak, has issued an immediate ban on gambling including popular games like dominoes within the county.

Commissioner Dechak, who assumed office recently said the decision forms part of his broader strategy to redirect the energy of young people toward constructive activities that support community development. He warned that any young person found loitering or gambling during work hours will face strict penalties. “I have made it crystal clear that nobody should be seen playing dominoes when he is supposed to be doing something productive for himself or his family,” Dechak said.

As part of enforcement, Dechak revealed that youths found defying the order could be compelled to participate in labour programmes such as brick-making along riverbanks to support public infrastructure projects within the county.

The ban has elicited mixed reactions among local residents. Some community members have welcomed the policy, suggesting it could help curb social ills associated with gambling, such as frequent fights and general neglect of responsibilities. Supporters believe the measure will encourage young people to embrace work and family priorities.

However, critics particularly among the youth express concern that outlawing gambling could drive vulnerable individuals toward crime and other harmful activities, especially since some depend on small earnings from betting and domino games to supplement their income. They argue that the government should instead focus on creating economic opportunities and industries to absorb the county’s growing youthful population.
