NWGB Collaborates with NGB to Raise Awareness on Underage Gambling in South Africa

The North West Gambling Board (NWGB), in partnership with the National Gambling Board (NGB), South Africa, recently completed a successful week-long Underage Gambling Awareness Campaign in schools across Kanana. The aim was to provide learners with essential knowledge about the risks, legal consequences, and social impacts associated with underage gambling.
Underage gambling has become a growing concern across many African communities, where the rapid expansion of mobile technology and informal betting markets has made it easier for minors to access gambling activities. To address this, the NWGB, the NGB, and other gambling regulators are focusing on educational outreach and community engagement within their respective jurisdictions.

Their strategy includes school-based awareness campaigns designed to empower young people with information about the risks, legal issues, and social consequences of underage gambling. Unlike traditional lectures, this campaign utilized interactive sessions and open discussions to foster meaningful engagement with students. These platforms facilitated critical conversations about minors’ increasing involvement in gambling activities, a key concern raised during the sessions. By creating a space for dialogue, the initiative aimed to empower learners to make informed choices and promote responsible decision-making and positive lifestyle habits.
Recognizing that awareness is only the first step, the campaign also highlighted available resources for those who may need assistance. Learners were encouraged to seek help through the South African Responsible Gambling Foundation, which offers dedicated support services.
