Cabinet Approves New Board Members for National Gambling Board, South Africa

Following the Cabinet meeting on Wednesday, 23 September 2026, the South African Cabinet approved executive appointments of board members to the National Gambling Board (NGB), subject to standard qualification checks and security clearances.

The appointments mark a major governance milestone, restoring permanent statutory leadership to the regulatory body after a 12-year period without a permanent board.

The newly appointed Board comprises Dr. Makgathatso Charlotte Chana Pilane-Majake as Chairperson and Mr. Kganki Matabane as Deputy Chairperson. The other members are Ms. Chuma Fani, Ms. Zoleka Gloria Bula, and Ms. Silochini Pillay.

To provide multi-sectoral oversight, the Board also includes representatives from key government departments and agencies, like Mr. Milton Ntwana of the South African Police Service, Ms. Niklasina Maria Kruger of the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition, Mr. Khayalethu Ntimbela of National Treasury, and Ms. Sizakele Magangoe of the Department of Social Development.

The establishment of the new Board concludes an extended governance gap dating back to 2014, when the NGB was placed under administration by the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition following a forensic audit into alleged maladministration and wasteful expenditure.

For more than ten years, the public entity operated under administrators and advisers without a statutory board. In late 2024, DTIC Minister Parks Tau formally initiated public recruitment to fill long-standing board vacancies across multiple state entities and restore good corporate governance.

The Board’s composition brings together legal, economic, law-enforcement and social-welfare perspectives to strengthen statutory regulation and oversight of South Africa’s gambling industry.
