Illegal gambling remains a challenge for regulated markets, particularly as players turn to unlicensed platforms operating outside established regulatory frameworks. Gambling through the black market can leave players with limited access to safeguards around age verification, responsible gambling, fair play, secure payments, and complaints or dispute resolution. To examine what illegal gambling means for players and the wider industry, iGaming AFRIKA, in partnership with the African iGaming Alliance (AiA), will host a webinar titled “The Hidden Cost of Illegal Gambling: What Does the Black Market Mean for Player Protection?”
Taking place on Friday, 11 September 2026, the webinar will bring together regulators, operators and responsible gambling stakeholders to examine the growing challenge of unlicensed gambling across African markets. The session will also wrap up Africa Safer Gambling Week, which is set to run from 7 to 11 September 2026.
The discussion will explore what is driving players towards unlicensed platforms, the risks associated with the black market, and whether current regulatory and enforcement measures are effective in addressing illegal gambling. It will also examine the role of regulators, operators and other industry stakeholders in strengthening player protection, improving channelisation towards regulated markets, and creating safer and more sustainable gambling environments across Africa.
