Gor Mahia Crowned 2022/2023 Kenya Premier League Champions

At the Moi International Sports Center in Kasarani on Sunday, Gor Mahia, the record local champions, were declared the 2022–23 Kenya Premier League champions after coming from behind to defeat Nairobi City Stars 4–1. Gor Mahia Kenya Premier League

Jonathan McKinstry needed a victory in the fiercely contested match between K’Ogalo and the reigning champions Tusker to claim the championship, which was presented to them by Football Kenya Federation President Nick Mwendwa, Chief Executive Officer Barry Otieno, and ICT and Digital Economy Cabinet Secretary Eliud Owalo.

After a scoreless first half, Samuel Kapen unexpectedly gave City Stars a 1-0 lead in the 48th minute. However, Benson Omalla responded with a record-equaling 26th goal of the season to bring K’Ogalo back into the game. Gor Mahia Kenya Premier League

Peter Lwasa, Austin Odhiambo and Alpha Onyango added other goals to secure a vital win for the champions. The win means Tusker will have now to win the FKF Cup final against Kakamega Homeboyz for a chance to play continental football next season.

McKinstry praised his players for overcoming a rocky season to win the championship after enduring two excruciatingly cold seasons.

It was only last week we seemed uncertain about our chances. I am certainly excited and I believe it’s a feeling shared by each of our players, members of the technical bench, the management and all our fans. We dedicate this historic win to our ardent fans who stuck with the team throughout the tough journey. They deserve to be happy after going through a period of uncertainty. This brings some breath of fresh air especially after last week’s demoralising 3-2 loss to Kakamega Homeboyz. Our focus now shifts to the Caf Champions League and we are glad we shall be competing at this level after such a long time. We have asserted authority in the local competition and we intend to do the same on the continental stage. Gor Mahia Kenya Premier League
