Kenyan Authorities Destroy 57 Illegal Gambling Machines in Embu East Crackdown

Security forces in Embu East have confiscated and destroyed 57 unlicensed gambling machines in an effort to curb illegal betting activities in the region.
The machines were set on fire and destroyed at the Runyenjes Deputy County Commissioner’s grounds following a coordinated operation by the Embu East Security Committee.
Prior to the destruction, Embu County Commissioner Maurice Wanyonyi explained that the multi-agency exercise aimed to enforce betting regulations, reduce petty crime, and address the increasing involvement of underage children in gambling.
Wanyonyi highlighted that the operators did not have the necessary licenses. He also warned that premises hosting these unregulated machines had become hotspots for criminal activity and other illicit operations.

The rise of illegal gambling has caused significant concern among local families. The County Commissioner noted that authorities had received numerous complaints from parents about their children’s excessive involvement in gambling, with some families reporting incidents of domestic theft linked to gambling habits.
In response, Wanyonyi directed police and local officials to extend the crackdown to all areas of Embu East. Embu East Deputy County Commissioner Jane Waruinge, who chairs the area’s security committee, commended and thanked security officers, local administrators, and community residents for their cooperation during the operation. Authorities have pledged to continue the crackdown until all unlicensed gambling activities are eliminated.
