MER CEO Appointed to Key Continental and International Regulatory Bodies

29 October 2025 – White River: The Mpumalanga Economic Regulator (MER) is proud to announce the appointment of its Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Vusi Mtsweni, to two prestigious and strategically significant roles within the global gambling regulatory community.

At a continental level, Mr. Mtsweni has been nominated and confirmed as a member of the African Lotteries & Gaming Association (ALGA) CEO’s Forum Steering Committee. ALGA is a pan-African, non-profit association that brings together gambling and lottery regulatory bodies, operators, public-interest organisations, and academic institutions from across Africa.

His appointment recognises his distinguished leadership, the growing influence of MER as a credible regulatory institution, and South Africa’s pivotal role in shaping responsible gaming policy and practice on the continent.

At the international level, the International Association of Gaming Regulators (IAGR)—a leading global network of regulators from all continents—has confirmed Mr. Vusi Mtsweni’s appointment to its Board of Trustees, representing the African Region. The confirmation was made during IAGR’s Annual Business Meeting held on Thursday, 23 October 2025, in Toronto, Canada. IAGR provides a vital global platform for regulatory collaboration, knowledge exchange, and the promotion of international best practices in gambling governance.

Under Mr. Mtsweni’s stewardship, MER continues to strengthen its governance framework, modernise regulatory systems, and promote responsible gambling practices in alignment with both national and international standards. His participation in these esteemed bodies is expected to enhance cross-border collaboration, knowledge-sharing, and capacity building for regulators across Africa.
