Ghana Sets Standards for Responsible Gaming Through Awareness Initiatives

In September, the Gaming Commission of Ghana, the nation’s regulatory authority for games of chance, designated the month as an awareness initiative aimed at promoting responsible gaming and highlighting safer gaming tools, among other goals. The campaign, themed “Embracing Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) for a Sustainable Gaming Industry,” culminated at the Alisa Hotel on October 17, 2024.

The Commission asserts that operators have a responsibility to foster responsible gaming practices that safeguard both players and the broader public through the ongoing enhancement of their systems. As a key regulatory body in the gaming sector, the Commission regularly organizes awareness months to inform and educate the community.

During his remarks, Gaming Commissioner Peter Mireku reiterated the importance of operators fulfilling their duty to encourage responsible gaming, which not only protects players but also ensures the welfare of society at large. He cautioned against allowing unqualified individuals to partake in gambling, as it can lead to detrimental habits that may impede their development into responsible leaders.

Mireku stressed that authorities must not remain passive observers while illegal gambling and underage betting occur. He underscored the necessity for the Commission to intensify efforts to combat illicit gambling activities and to prevent individuals under the legal gaming age from participating.

Inspector General of Police Dr. George Dampare, who participated in the awareness campaign, advocated for greater investment in awareness technologies to deter underage and unauthorized individuals from engaging in gaming. He urged compliance with the law and called on the gaming community to ensure that minors, specifically those under 18, refrain from gaming activities.

The IGP also pledged to bolster initiatives that create a conducive environment for the gaming industry to flourish, fostering economic growth and social benefits, while ensuring that unauthorized participants and underage individuals are excluded.

Various stakeholders, partners, and members of the gaming industry applauded the Commission’s efforts and committed to collaborate on protecting data collection and combating anti-money laundering, in line with the nation’s legal framework. Ghana Responsible Gaming
