Gaming Board of Tanzania Amasses TZS 260.21 Billion in Revenue Over Four Years

Under the Sixth Phase Government headed by President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, the Gaming Board of Tanzania (GBT) has reported a significant growth in revenue collections, nearly doubling the previous revenues of TZS 131.99 billion in just four years, totaling over TZS 260.21 billion.

GBT Acting Director General, Mr. Olesumayan Daniel, stated during a press conference organized by the Treasury Registrar’s Office in Dar es Salaam that the industry has created over 30,000 direct and indirect jobs and paid TZS 922.25 billion in taxes, confirming its expanding role in Tanzania’s economy.

Ithuba Tanzania Limited, a business with 60% South African investment and 40% Tanzanian ownership, was granted the National Lottery license by GBT during the 2024–2025 fiscal year. Ithuba formally started operations in April 2025 after investing more over USD 20 million, or roughly TZS 50 billion.

Mr. Daniel emphasized the significance of betting responsibly, reminding the audience that gambling is a kind of amusement rather than a source of money. He also asked gamers to use self-control to prevent financial loss.

Additionally, Gaming Board of Tanzania donates five percent of its earnings to the nation’s sports development. To far, the National Sports Council (BMT) has received between TZS 44 billion and TZS 53 billion in funding for sports-related projects.

A total of 8,549 betting games are offered by the 62 businesses that the board has licensed. Unlicensed operators continue to pose a problem, though, which has led to continuous measures to crack down on illicit activity and safeguard vulnerable populations, such as making sure children don’t bet.

The sector has received TZS 66.7 billion in new investments over the past two years, with growth expected to continue. The advancements made by Gaming Board of Tanzania demonstrate the government’s dedication to controlling and utilizing the betting sector to promote both sports and economic growth throughout President Samia’s administration.
