More than 250 University of the Free State students joined a three-day responsible gambling workshop from May 6 to 8. SportPesa delivered the program with national and provincial authorities. The initiative brought together law enforcement, regulators, and university representatives. Organizers focused on education, harm prevention, and South Africa’s gambling laws.
Key factors behind the SportPesa Gambling Awareness Campaign
First the campaign focused on identifying the warning signs of problem gambling to help students recognize when recreation turns into compulsion. Participants learned to spot behavioral shifts, such as spending critical pocket money on bets, skipping lectures to track odds, or constantly chasing losses. By understanding these early indicators, students can intervene before the behavior impacts their personal lives.
The workshops also addressed the hidden effects of gambling. They highlighted how financial pressure quickly triggers anxiety and academic decline. Students often hide their losses from family and friends, which leads to isolation, stress, and a drop in grades. The sessions created a safe space to discuss how financial strain directly compromises mental health and focus during exams.
The initiative also provided practical strategies to balance student well-being with recreational betting. Facilitators shared useful financial literacy tips, such as setting strict betting limits and treating gambling strictly as entertainment rather than a source of income. Students also received guidance on using platform self-exclusion tools and setting time boundaries to keep their academic goals on track.

SportPesa South Africa managing director Dean Delaney said the workshops aimed to give students clear information and support options. He said operators, regulators, law enforcement, and universities share a duty to protect young people.
Through such initiatives, community welfare and personal growth and wellbeing are being asserted by the firm to its players. Future collaborations are a key factor as the director noted. The initiative shows how responsible gambling education is moving beyond operator messaging. Students and educational centers are now being established as key centers for educating, curbing and rehabbing gambling problems.
