Pitso Mosimane Returns to a Rebuilt Bafana Bafana
Pitso Mosimane has been officially named the head coach of South Africa’s national footbal team, taking over the job from Hugo Broos. The 62-year-old tactician was formerly announced at the SAFA House in Johannesburg on Tuesday, September 2026. This was a much-anticipated homecoming 14 years after his turbulent first stint ended in 2012.
This time, Mosimane has inherited a dramatically different Bafana Bafana compared to the side he left in June 2012 after failing to qualify for the AFCON finals. His predecessor, Hugo Broos, orchestrated a footballing renaissance over a five-year tenure, taking South Africa to a 3rd-place bronze finish at the 2023 AFCON and a historic round-of-32 appearance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Mosimane’s immediate task is hitting the ground running for the 2027 AFCON qualifiers. He will lead the team against Guinea and Eritrea later this month.
Since 2012, Mosimane has transformed into one of Africa’s most decorated club managers, winning three CAF Champions League titles. This includes one with Mamelodi Sundowns and two with Al Ahly.
During the announcement at SAFA House, he openly noted that the return is a national calling aimed at winning rather than just participating. “I know that this is not a coaching job; this is bigger than Pitso Mosimane. I understand what this team means to South Africa,” he said.
