The Kaduna Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC successfully secured convictions for a woman named Oluwayemisi Samuel and Joshua Samuel, her son, on separate counts that had the appearance of false information.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the EFCC claimed that Oluwayemisi and Joshua squandered N5.6 million on sports betting and ordered the EFCC to receive a false petition alleging that the money was fraudulently transferred from their Opay account to a sports betting account by an unidentified person without their consent.
Both the mother and the child pleaded guilty to the charges.
N. Salele, the prosecutor’s attorney, urged the court to convict the defendants in accordance with their pleas.
In his decision, Justice A. A. Bello found both defendants guilty and sentenced them to 7 years in jail, with the possibility of an additional N150,000 fine.
