North West Gambling Sector Drives Economic Growth with R2.38 Billion Revenue in 2026/27

The North West Gambling Board (NWGB) has emerged as a primary driver of provincial economic growth, generating R2.38 billion in Gross Gambling Revenue and contributing R164.5 million in taxes directly to the provincial fiscus for the 2026/27 financial year.
The figures were released by Bitsa Lenkopane, the MEC for the Department of Economic Development, Environment, Conservation, and Tourism (DEDECT), during the tabling of the 2026/27 budget. MEC Lenkopane described the NWGB as a cornerstone of the province’s strategy for community development and sustainable economic expansion.
Beyond direct revenue, the board’s regulatory activities have had a significant social impact. According to the budget highlights, the sector supported 1,641 direct jobs within the province. Additionally, R7.6 million was invested into various community support programs aimed at fostering development across the region.

A key priority for the 2026/27 period is an intensified “intelligence-led” enforcement strategy to eliminate illegal gambling. DEDECT and the NWGB are partnering with law enforcement agencies to secure the provincial economy and protect regulated operators.
MEC Lenkopane emphasized: “Our regulatory work is not just about compliance; it’s about building sustainable township economies and creating real opportunities across all communities.”
