The Betting Control and Licensing Board (BCLB) Prioritizes Corporate Social Responsibility: Dr. Jane Makau

Dr. Jane Makau, Chairperson at the Betting Control and Licensing Board (BCLB) while speaking in an exclusive interview with iGaming AFRIKA during the Gaming Tech Summit Africa 2024, emphasized the importance of corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives that benefit society.

She commended the BCLB’s efforts to ensure that gaming brands in Kenya give back to the community, stating, “The Kenyan society can relate with the betting companies that they are not just doing business in Kenya but also giving back to society.”

Dr. Makau also highlighted the significant growth in tax payments by betting companies, noting that revenue has increased from KES 18bn last year to KES 24bn this year, with a target of KES 30bn for the next financial year.

Mr. Innocent Muganda, a board member and former presidential taskforce member, praised the BCLB’s achievements in protecting punters, revenue collection, and tax collection. He specifically commended Dr. Makau’s efforts in ensuring that CSR activities by gaming brands benefit the community.

Notably, several initiatives have already been undertaken by popular Kenyan betting sites Shabiki.com and betPawa, including the provision of water tanks, school rehabilitation, and payment of school fees for students in over 32 counties, with plans to cover all 47 counties.

Mr. Fredrick Mbasi, Deputy Director of the Betting Control and Licensing Board (BCLB), reiterated the board’s role in regulating the gambling sector in Kenya, highlighting their focus areas, “We have done a lot in player protection, responsible marketing and streamlining of payment of taxes.”
