Nigeria’s Gaming Industry Engages NDPC to Strengthen Data Privacy and Compliance

In a significant move toward enhancing data privacy, the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) recently hosted a delegation from the country’s gaming industry, including representatives from the Association of Nigeria Bookmakers (ANB) and the Nigeria Licensed Lottery Operators Forum (NLLOF). The meeting, led by NLLOF Chairman Mr. Chima Onwuka, focused on aligning the sector with the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 (NDP Act) and addressing the complexities of processing large volumes of personal data.

The gaming sector, which serves millions of Nigerians monthly, recognized the importance of complying with the NDP Act. During the meeting, delegates sought guidance on implementing robust data protection measures and requested training for their members and agents. They also proposed establishing annual engagement sessions with the NDPC to remain informed of evolving regulatory requirements and best practices in privacy and data protection.

Commenting on the engagement, NDPC CEO Dr. Vincent Olatunji said, “Their willingness to engage with the Commission demonstrates a shared understanding that robust data protection practices are essential for building trust among citizens and stakeholders.” He added, “At the NDPC, we view data controllers and processors as partners. Our aim is not to hinder innovation but to regulate in a way that supports growth and ease of doing business.”

Dr. Olatunji further explained that the Commission is developing sector-specific compliance guidelines for the gaming industry, acknowledging its unique scale and the sensitive nature of the personal data it handles. By providing guidance, training, and ongoing support, the NDPC aims to help gaming operators adopt internationally recognized privacy and data protection standards while fostering public trust.

The meeting also underscored the Commission’s collaborative approach. Rather than acting as a barrier to innovation, the NDPC seeks to position data controllers and processors as partners in creating a secure, transparent, and trustworthy ecosystem for personal data. For the gaming sector, which processes personal data of over 60 million Nigerians monthly, these consultations provide clarity on compliance obligations and help operators manage data responsibly.
