ZGA Calls for Strict Compliance Amid Nationwide Inspections After Hichilema’s Re-Election

The Zambia Gaming Association (ZGA) has stressed the importance of regulatory compliance following the re-election of President Hakainde Hichilema for a second term. Emphasising responsible operations, ZGA has initiated a nationwide inspection campaign to ensure adherence to licensing conditions and combat illegal gaming activities, particularly concerning underage participation and unlawful gaming machines.

ZGA Chairperson Noah Malungila welcomed President Hichilema’s continued leadership, highlighting the progressive strides made in regulatory adherence since 2021. He went on to elaborate on how the re-election of President Hichilema for a second term could strengthen and grow the country’s iGaming industry. However, he stressed that only consistent enforcement and operator accountability can help in sustaining the growth of the sector.

President Hakainde Hichilema was declared president-elect by the Electoral Commission of Zambia on August 18, following a national presidential election conducted in the country on the 13th of the same month. He is scheduled to be sworn in for his second five-year term on 1st of September.

In coordination with local councils and national enforcement agencies, including the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) and the Immigration Department, ZGA announced an ambitious inspection schedule targeting all licensed betting and gaming operators. The campaign adopts a proactive “seize-and-secure” methodology, removing illegal gaming equipment and ensuring all operations meet stipulated licensing requirements.

However, the rapid sector expansion has raised concerns over gambling dependency, particularly among young audiences. Secretary-General Darius Sinkamba emphasised that inspections will focus not only on licensing adherence but also on identifying and addressing harmful practices. In instances of non-compliance, operators will face immediate regulatory action.

Operators are urged to maintain meticulous records, adhere strictly to licensing conditions, and proactively address potential harm to players. ZGA stresses that compliance is both a legal and ethical obligation, essential to safeguarding the integrity of Zambia’s growing gaming market. Non-compliant entities risk sanctions, equipment seizure, or revocation of licenses.
