MAGLA Acquires Land to Relocate and Rebuild Cyclone Freddy-Damaged Mpatsa Primary School

The Malawi Gaming and Lotteries Authority (MAGLA) has acquired 6.8 hectares of land to relocate and rebuild Mpatsa Full Primary School in Nsanje District. The initiative provides a secure, flood-resistant site for the community following the devastation of the original school grounds by Cyclone Freddy.

Established in 1910, Mpatsa Primary School serves over 2,600 learners in Traditional Authority Tengani, Nsanje District. In March 2023, Cyclone Freddy submerged the original school site under sand and mud, destroying classroom blocks. Since the disaster, thousands of students have endured severe learning conditions, taking lessons in temporary shelters or outdoors under trees.

To restore safe educational conditions, MAGLA purchased a 6.8-hectare parcel of land valued at K37 million situated away from flood-prone riverbanks. The expanded site is designed to accommodate both a full primary school and a dedicated Teacher Development Centre (TDC).

Speaking during the official handover ceremony, MAGLA Director General Muchanakhwaye Mpuluka reaffirmed the authority’s commitment to directing the Gaming and Lotteries Fund toward impactful social development.

“Children deserve to learn in an environment that is safe, dignified, and conducive for their development,” Mpuluka stated.

He added that MAGLA’s support aims to motivate students to prioritize education while reinforcing the authority’s broader mandate of fostering a responsible gaming nation.

Welcoming the land donation, Nsanje Central Member of Parliament Francis Kasaila commended MAGLA for restoring hope to the local community.
