Gambling Authority Highlights Horse Racing’s Cultural and Economic Importance at Ghanzi Derby
The Gambling Authority of Botswana’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Moruntshi Kemorwale, recently attended the Ghanzi Derby at the Ghanzi International Racecourse Showground. Where he emphasised the importance of safeguarding horse racing as a vital cultural asset and a catalyst for sustainable economic growth.
The Ghanzi Derby is a celebration of Botswana’s cultural heritage, bringing together stakeholders from the sporting, agricultural, and commercial sectors.
The occasion was attended by the Minister of Sport and Arts, Hon. Jacob Kelebeng, alongside Mr. Kemorwale, who attended as a special guest and delivered an address alongside other notable figures in Botswana.
Speaking to patrons, industry players, and dignitaries, Mr. Kemorwale outlined a vision for the future of horse racing in Botswana. He described the sport as an important part of the nation’s cultural heritage and a potential driver of regional development.
He also stressed that growth in the gaming and sporting sectors depends on strong foundations, including transparent racing and betting practices, regulatory compliance, and fair competition that protects the dignity of jockeys and breeders. Without these safeguards, commercial interest may decline and public trust may be undermined. Effective regulatory oversight is therefore essential to sustainable growth.
Addressing responsible gambling, Mr. Kemorwale reminded patrons that gambling should be treated as regulated entertainment, not as a source of income. He encouraged them to bet only what they could afford to lose, keep essential household funds for living expenses, education, and family needs, and seek support if their betting began to cause harm.
