National Lottery Authority Trains Retailers as Lottery Operations Go Digital

The National Lottery Authority (NLA) recently conducted training at the NLA Training School to equip new retailers with the practical skills needed to operate its newly introduced Point-of-Sale (POS) terminals.

Ghana’s lottery sector is undergoing a major technological transformation through a strategic partnership between the NLA and Fidelity Bank Ghana. The initiative is replacing outdated 2G paper-based machines with 5,000 modern Android POS terminals across the country.

To prepare retailers for the transition, the NLA’s Training and Resource Unit held a practical training session on Tuesday, 29 September 2026. The session covered hands-on terminal operation, transaction workflows, and customer service.

The retailer training builds on earlier capacity-building sessions for NLA staff and regional sales managers. These sessions prepared them to monitor transactions, manage device functionality, and oversee real-time operations.

A key feature of the upgraded platform is the higher instant-prize payout limit at POS terminals, which has increased from GH¢1,200 to GH¢30,000, approximately US$2,100 or €2,280. For prizes above GH¢30,000, Fidelity Bank has introduced a discounting arrangement that allows eligible winners to receive immediate payment from the bank, while the NLA repays the amount over an agreed period.

The system demonstrated its operational capability on 17 September 2026, when the NLA recorded its first win through a live digital terminal and paid the prize to the winner immediately.

The training and terminal rollout formed part of the NLA’s transition to digital POS staking. The Authority’s 1 October 2026 deadline required all private lotto operators, agents, and writers to move from manual, paper-based operations to digital systems.

By replacing obsolete 2G hardware and paper receipts, the Authority aims to curb illegal operations, improve transaction transparency, and expand its licensed retail network. The partnership is projected to increase total deposits tenfold over three years, generating state revenue to support national development initiatives in education, healthcare, and infrastructure.
