ALGA Launches Women in Gaming and Lotteries Africa to Build Leadership and Inclusion

The African Lotteries and Gaming Association (ALGA) officially launched Women in Gaming and Lotteries Africa (ALGA WGL) with the aim of reshaping the leadership landscape of the continent’s gaming industry.

While women have long been active participants in the sector, representing nearly half of the global gaming audience, a significant gap persists in decision-making power. Despite their capabilities, women remain disproportionately underrepresented at executive and board levels, resulting in a decision-making core that does not fully reflect the sector’s diverse consumer base.

ALGA stated, “For years, the industry has focused on inclusion, bringing more women into the room. But inclusion without influence is a ceiling disguised as progress.”

To address this, ALGA WGL was established to confront this “power structure issue” by moving beyond symbolic inclusion toward genuine influence. Under the theme “Advancing Female Representation in Gaming Leadership: From Inclusion to Influence,” the initiative aims to empower women to lead rather than just participate.

Built on the principle of being “for African women, by African women,” this new platform is dedicated to fostering female leadership, mentorship, and professional visibility across the entire gaming and lottery ecosystem. The platform is designed as a pan-African network that brings together women from diverse roles, including regulators and policymakers, technology and innovation experts, operations and management professionals, as well as educators and game developers, aiming to bridge the visibility gap. While women already hold critical roles in the industry, their contributions often go unrecognized. The platform provides a formal route to recognition through mentorship programs, professional development, and leadership pathways, ensuring women are equipped to progress at all stages of their careers.

The launch of ALGA WGL is framed not only as a social necessity but also as a strategic business imperative. Diverse leadership is proven to drive stronger performance, broader creativity, and deeper market resonance. For the African gaming market, which continues to formalize across regions like Kenya, South Africa, and Zimbabwe, this initiative offers an opportunity to build inclusivity into the industry’s foundation rather than attempting to retrofit it later.

By elevating female voices, ALGA is ensuring that the policies, products, and systems of the future reflect the realities of the entire audience. Through this commitment to visibility and advancement, ALGA WGL is set to contribute to the sustainable growth of a more equitable and forward-looking African gaming sector. ALGA said:

Without women in these positions, the industry risks designing experiences, regulations, and systems that do not fully reflect the realities of its audience. The lack of female leadership is not just a social issue; it is a strategic one. Research consistently shows that diverse leadership drives stronger performance, broader creativity, and deeper market resonance.”
